In an effort to enhance Eco-friendly and cost-effective transit options, the Nigerian administration has introduced a series of buses powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Abuja. This project, part of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), seeks to lower transport expenses while encouraging Sustainability and utilising the country’s rich natural gas reserves. During the official launch of the Renewed Hope Clean Energy Transport Initiative, Said Ahmed Alkali, the Minister of Transportation, presented 15 buses powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) to three prominent transport unions: the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).
During the event, Alkali highlighted the government’s dedication to reducing Nigerians’ financial strain by implementing CNG, a cleaner and more affordable fuel option. This effort marks a significant advancement in promoting CNG as a more affordable and environmentally friendly fuel option for the people of Nigeria. He stated that CNG buses would decrease operational expenses for transportation companies, which would, in turn, bring down ticket prices for passengers. He emphasised the significance of optimising resources and committed to having the Ministry of Transportation spearhead educational initiatives to promote public awareness and comprehension of the advantages of CNG-based transportation.
Gas resources will be utilised to energise the economy.
The minister emphasised the importance of utilising Nigeria’s natural gas assets to foster local development instead of merely exporting crude resources. He emphasised that President Tinubu’s stance on exporting gas solely to bring back derivatives will cease. They will utilise the gas resources to energise the economy, following the example set by countries such as Japan. He referred to the buses as instruments for transformation and financial uplift, encouraging the transport unions to take good care of them to prolong their usability. He stated that this project aims to convert Nigeria’s assets into real advantages for its people.
Michael Oluwagbemi, the Director of the Presidential CNG Initiative, highlighted the program’s advantages, emphasising that citizens of Abuja will have access to 40 days of complimentary rides on the new buses. Following this initial timeframe, reduced fares will be implemented, ensuring ongoing support after the recent removal of fuel subsidies. Oluwagbemi stated that this project is a joint undertaking with the Ministries of Transportation, Gas, and Finance. He highlighted the ecological advantages of CNG, pointing out that it costs 70-80% less than gasoline and diesel while producing 80% fewer emissions. He stated that this power source would not just lessen our dependence on foreign imports but would also generate employment opportunities and stimulate economic development.
Increasing expenses associated with transportation will be addressed.
Musa Mohammed Maitakobi, the Executive National President of RTEAN, commended the government for the program, calling it a relief effort aimed at reducing transportation expenses. Moving goods and individuals effectively is crucial for a thriving economy, linking communities to essential services and opportunities. According to him, these CNG buses symbolise the government’s commitment to tackling the increasing expenses associated with transportation. He highlighted that the buses would offer complimentary transport for individuals requiring assistance and foster a beneficial influence within neighbourhoods.
He also pointed out the ecological advantages, asserting that CNG buses signify progress towards a more eco-friendly and sustainable tomorrow. He guaranteed that the public would have easy access to routes and timetables to enhance the initiative’s impact. He urged RTEAN drivers and personnel to dedicate themselves to the program’s achievement, highlighting the importance of integrity, respect, and service. They are committed to putting in a relentless effort to guarantee that this initiative fulfils its purpose and provides support to those who require it the most, stated Maitakobi.

Utilising natural gas allows the nation to cut expenses, generate employment opportunities, and support greener energy alternatives, positively impacting both the Economy and ecological health. Through ongoing cooperation with stakeholders and backing from the community, this initiative could revolutionise Nigeria’s transportation system, enhancing affordability, efficiency, and sustainability for every citizen.
