Learning will eliminate poverty and guarantee equal access for everyone.

The federal government is encouraging stakeholders in the Education sector to collaborate on new methods to improve Literacy rates across the nation. The National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC) recently held a gathering with representatives from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to devise plans for addressing literacy issues in the nation. During the Stakeholders Meeting themed” Stakeholders Meeting on Achieving Youth and Adult Literacy, a critical pillar 4 of the Roadmap for the Nigeria Education Sector (2024-2027)”, Dr. Yusuf Sununu emphasised the importance of quality education for Nigeria’s future.

He mentioned President Bola Tinubu is determined to address the country’s Poverty-related learning. Sununu stressed the significance of learning in eliminating poverty and guaranteeing equal access to quality learning for everyone in the country, regardless of their age, gender, or location. The minister applauded NMEC for leading the way in following President Tinubu’s learning agenda. Emphasising the importance of a comprehensive strategy, he highlighted the necessity of enhancing the standards of education and certifications for adults and non-traditional schools.

Stakeholders are crucial in closing literacy gaps for youth and adults.

This includes integrating skill development and raising awareness among parents about the value of learning. As he reported, President Bola Tinubu’s leadership has successfully facilitated the re-enrollment of more than 2 million children into schools. The minister revealed plans for the federal government to introduce skills training programs in adult and non-formal schools nationwide. Learning is essential for all individuals, regardless of age. It should encompass formal and non-formal learning for both children and adults. Certification should be a requirement to validate the learning received.

Efforts are also being made to enhance the standard of education and credentials provided to adults and non-traditional educational institutions. In addition, they seek to integrate skill development into the program to empower themselves with the necessary skills to advocate for it. During the event, the minister emphasised the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in eliminating literacy gaps, focusing on addressing challenges in data collection and out-of-school children. He believed that a comprehensive strategy was essential for enhancing school and credentials for adults and informal learning institutions.

Unrestricted access to quality learning will boost the literacy rate.

Also, the minister emphasised the importance of involving all stakeholders and ensuring that Nigerians are on board with the plans. In emphasising the critical role of education in building a sustainable future, Executive Secretary of NMEC Prof. Simon Akpama made it clear that it is an essential aspect to consider. He emphasised the importance of united efforts in tackling the deficiency issue in the country, a challenge he deemed significant. Hon. Ibrahim Mustapha, the House Committee on Alternative Education chairman, praised the president’s determination to transform the education landscape during his speech at the event and emphasised the National Assembly’s dedication to creating a society that prioritises learning.

Easy access to learning offers numerous benefits that extend beyond individual growth to national development. When citizens have unrestricted access to quality learning, it increases the overall education rate, which promotes a more informed and capable populace. This can result in higher Productivity, Innovation, and Economic Growth as educated individuals are more likely to participate in the workforce, contribute to technological advancements, and engage in entrepreneurial activities. Moreover, learning empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their health, governance, and social issues, enhancing overall quality of life and promoting a more equitable society.

To eliminate educational deficiency in the country, the federal government also needs to improve Infrastructure, provide free or subsidised learning, offer adult learning programs with Vocational Training, utilise e-learning platforms, and promote community involvement. By building more schools, supporting access to learning materials, and employing qualified teachers, they can ensure learning is accessible to all. Policies that remove financial barriers and flexible adult learning options will increase participation. Leveraging Technology and raising awareness in communities will create a more educated and prosperous nation.
