FG should subsidise poultry feed cost

Challenges have discouraged many from agriculture and poultry farming.

Mr. Olaoye Ayodeji, the Chairman of the Ikorodu chapter of the Poultry Association in Lagos State, during a meeting in Ikorodu has called on the Federal Government to consider providing Subsidies for poultry feeds in order to lower prices for consumers in Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of this issue as part of Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to improve the quality of life for all Nigerians. On the other hand, he mentioned that numerous farmers have been deterred by significant challenges such as insecurity, expensive feed costs, and high interest rates charged by banks in the country.

The chairman of the association mentioned that due to various challenges, a lot of individuals have been compelled to distance themselves from Agriculture and poultry farming. He emphasized that the agricultural revolution initiated by the Federal Government could truly make a difference if the citizens could notice a decrease in the prices of food items and products. He pointed out that the escalating costs of feed are largely attributed to insecurity, as farmers are unable to tend to their farms due to safety concerns.

Farmers should stay updated on innovative farming methods and strategies.

Speaking further, He mentioned that the absence of maize, a key ingredient in bird feeds commonly grown in the northern region, is causing a shortage in the market because of insecurity. He urged individuals to stay updated on innovative farming methods and strategies for addressing Biosecurity issues, which have been a significant hurdle for farmers nationwide. He mentioned their strategy involved collaborating with government entities from local to national levels to enhance the industry nationwide.

Ensuring Food Security in Nigeria is a critical issue that requires multi-faceted solutions. By subsidizing the cost of feed, the government can help increase the availability of affordable protein sources for the population. Poultry products are a valuable source of nutrition, especially for children and pregnant women, and making them more accessible can contribute to combating Malnutrition and improving overall health outcomes in the country. In addition to supporting farmers, the government should also focus on promoting sustainable farming practices to enhance Food Security in the long term.

Similarly, Mr. Wasiu Adesina, the Chairman of Ikorodu Local Council, has affirmed his commitment to collaborating with the association to facilitate successful poultry operations and increase food production within the region. Adesina announced plans for the council to focus on boosting the agriculture sector to create more job opportunities for the large number of young people in the community. He assured that at least 50 young individuals would be supported to participate in international agricultural training programs in various countries, showing his administration’s dedication to the industry.

They emphasized the importance of residents and landowners participating in local agriculture to enhance food security. They also urged indigenous farmers to protect their land for farming purposes. Collaborating with farmers is crucial for improving efficiency and Productivity in the sector. Agriculture is the backbone of any nation’s economy, essential for its survival. To promote youth involvement in agriculture, his administration will send young people abroad for training, who will then pass on their knowledge to others, encouraging greater participation and self-sufficiency.
