FG launches OXFAM’s Climate program

Over 1,000 ambassadors have been established to back the gov’t's efforts.

The Federal Government has recently launched the Oxfam Nigeria Climate Justice Youth Ambassadors (CJYA) program in order to enhance initiatives to address climate issues across the country. A ceremonial event was held in Abuja, in partnership with OXFAM Nigeria and multiple development organizations, to celebrate World Environment Day with the inauguration. Minister of Environment Mallam Balarabe Lawal encouraged the ambassadors to stay dedicated to their cause at the ceremony, reaffirming the government’s strong support for sustainability.

He highlighted the importance of the theme for this year, focusing on Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience. Kenneth Akpan, the Project Coordinator for Climate Justice at OXFAM Nigeria, announced that a network of more than 1,000 ambassadors has been established across the country to back the government’s efforts in confronting the climate emergency at various tiers of governance. Akpan shed light on how the Climate Justice Youth Ambassadors initiative was born out of the AACI project.

It will promote the importance of environmental education.

Also, he underscored the crucial importance of young people in addressing the climate issues faced by the nation and aiding government initiatives across different tiers. In addition, Akpan highlighted the dedication of OXFAM to ensure the promotion of Gender Equality in the context of environmental justice. He pointed out the varied effects of Climate Change on individuals based on their gender, as he stressed the importance of tackling these inequalities in the country through young citizens.

Aliyu Sadiq, in his capacity as the Acting Coordinator of the Climate Justice Youth Ambassadors Network, highlighted that the main objective of the ambassadors is to raise awareness about the environment and minimize its negative effects in their local communities. At the inauguration ceremony, there was a quiz competition for Environment Day School, where Junior Secondary School Jabi came out victorious. The goal of this project is to aid the promotion of the importance of environmental education.

Climate change & the need for climate change education are int’l problems.

More so, the project is aimed at promoting the significance of climate change Education within the Federal Ministry of Environment, in order to cultivate a generation that is aware of climate issues and to establish environment clubs in schools across Nigeria. Climate change education, also known as CCE, is a form of education that focuses on finding solutions to climate change. Through CCE, students learn about the reasons behind climate change, its effects, and how to adapt to these changes.

Ultimately, the goal of CCE is to inspire individuals to make environmentally conscious choices and lead more sustainable lives. Climate change and the need for climate change education are international problems that can be integrated into school curricula to aid the elevation of local awareness and broaden perspectives on addressing climate change. Climate Change Education goes beyond simply learning about climate change; it involves learning practical methods for addressing and ensuring mitigation of its effects.

CCE serves as a vital tool for policymakers to grasp the critical need for implementing strategies to address climate change at both a national and worldwide level. Specifically, CCE plays a vital role in enhancing the ability of at-risk communities to withstand the negative impacts of climate change, especially those that are already susceptible to its effects.
