Under the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) in Nigeria launched the “Operation Free Our Roads” initiative. The six geopolitical zones of Nigeria will see improved road Infrastructure as a result of this national effort. Mr. Chukwuemeka Agbasi, Managing Director of FERMA, declared that the organization has finished 286 projects, including general road maintenance, bridge and culvert construction, pavement strengthening, and pothole filling. About 22,800 employment have been created by these projects, both directly and indirectly.
In every part of Nigeria, significant projects have been implemented. Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina State roads in the North West and Nasarawa, Kwara, Niger, Kogi, Benue, and Plateau State roads in the North Central area were fixed. Projects for road renovation and upkeep were completed in the North eastern states of Taraba, Borno, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, and Yobe. Similar to this, road repairs in the states of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Edo have been finished in the South-South.
Improved road infrastructure greatly improves the quality of life.
Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states in the South East received maintenance, whereas Lagos, Ekiti, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, and Oyo states in the South West received attention for their roads. The goal of the program is to increase road safety and connectivity, particularly during the rainy season, through cooperation between FERMA and the Federal Ministry of Works. By enabling more efficient mobility, cutting down on travel time, and minimizing the cost of vehicle maintenance, improved road infrastructure greatly improves the quality of life.
Rehabilitating important highways, for example, has made marketplaces more accessible in regions like Jigawa and Kano states, allowing farmers and small enterprises to carry commodities more effectively. Many locals now have better lives as a result of this, which has boosted local economies. Building and maintaining roads and bridges in flood-prone locations has also reduced the risk of Erosion and floods, which used to cause major problems for the surrounding communities, especially during the rainy season. In addition to making travel safer, the program has maintained connectivity between rural and urban regions, ensuring ongoing access to critical services like healthcare and Education in states like Plateau and Bayelsa where heavy rains routinely cause road damage.
Using different dev. projects to provide Nigerians with real advantages.
The “Operation Free Our Roads” program is a component of the larger President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which attempts to raise everyone’s standard of life, enhance infrastructure, and boost Nigeria’s economy. The goal is centred on using different development projects to provide Nigerians with real advantages. By addressing significant infrastructure deficiencies that have long impeded Economic Growth and development, the road repair project is in line with this strategy. The government prioritizes road repair in order to guarantee that residents in every area have access to essential infrastructure and to foster an atmosphere that encourages corporate growth.
Leaders in the community and local recipients have applauded these initiatives. One Gombe State small business owner said, for example, “It’s now easier for me to get my items to market thanks to the road upgrades. Because of these improved roads, my business has expanded.” The importance of the restored roads was also emphasized by a community leader in Borno State, who stated, “These projects are more than just roadworks; they are lifelines that connect us to the rest of the country, bringing hope to our people.”

Future ambitions for FERMA include expanding its maintenance operations to include even more vital road networks around the nation. The government is also investigating the application of more sophisticated materials and technologies to guarantee the durability of the roads and lower the need for maintenance on a regular basis. Furthermore, FERMA wants to further incorporate local content into its operations and maintain the momentum of job creation by enlisting the help of more regional suppliers and contractors. With an emphasis on resolving new infrastructure issues and making sure that the roads are safe and usable in all weather conditions, the continuous cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Works is anticipated to continue.
