The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the temporary closure of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, Oyo State, as part of an upgrade to improve Infrastructure and elevate the airport to international standards. The closure, which has received approval from the federal government, is seen as a necessary step to facilitate renovations, including runway extension, terminal expansion, and the enhancement of critical operational facilities. In a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, the authority disclosed that the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency had officially shut down the runway, suspending its operations under international Aviation regulations.

Meanwhile, the move aligns with safety recommendations and ensures that ongoing Construction activities do not interfere with flight operations or endanger passengers and personnel. The ongoing project represents a significant step in the Oyo State government’s vision to transform the terminal from a domestic hub to a fully functional international facility. Over the past few years, the state has pushed for this transition, securing the necessary approvals and funding to initiate extensive remodelling efforts. The upgrade includes lengthening the runway to 3,000 meters, a crucial step to accommodate larger aircraft that typically operate on international routes.

Projected completion timeline and expected impact on air travel.

Additionally, the project encompasses the construction of a new terminal building designed to handle an increased passenger capacity. This development aims to support the anticipated rise in travellers, positioning the air terminal as an alternative to Lagos and Abuja for international flights. Alongside the terminal upgrade, authorities are investing in modern airfield lighting systems, a revamped fire service station, and an expanded car park to improve safety and accessibility. The state government and FAAN have set clear timelines for the various phases of the upgrade.

In the meantime, the runway extension is projected to be completed by the last quarter of 2025, while the new terminal building is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2026. These enhancements will improve the terminal capacity, increasing its passenger handling capabilities from 100,000 to one million annually. Meanwhile, the improved infrastructure will attract more airlines and create opportunities for local businesses, positioning Ibadan as a strategic air transport hub. Stakeholders, including aviation operators and investors, have welcomed the initiative, acknowledging its potential to drive regional development and ease congestion at major airports in the country.

Ensuring compliance with international safety and operational standards.

Furthermore, the upgrade aligns with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s regulations, ensuring that the airport meets the latest safety and operational standards. The installation of advanced navigational and airfield lighting systems will improve visibility and flight safety, particularly during nighttime operations and adverse weather conditions. The modern fire service station will also enhance emergency response capabilities, further strengthening the terminal compliance with global best practices. Regular consultations with Airline operators, regulatory bodies, and Security Agencies have been conducted to minimise disruptions and address operational concerns.

While the temporary closure may inconvenience passengers and airlines, FAAN has reassured stakeholders that all necessary measures have been taken to minimise disruptions. The authority has advised travellers to make alternative flight arrangements and pledged to provide timely updates on the project’s progress. Efforts are also underway to improve road infrastructure leading to neighbouring airports, ensuring seamless connectivity for affected passengers. The closure period will further serve as an opportunity for more evaluation of operational procedures, with a focus on optimising passenger experience and service delivery.

Beyond improving air transport infrastructure, the terminal upgrade is expected to contribute to regional economic development. The increased passenger capacity and international flight operations will attract businesses, encourage foreign investment, and create job opportunities for residents of Oyo State and beyond. The development will enhance cargo handling capabilities and support agricultural exports, fostering growth in key sectors such as agribusiness and manufacturing. Lastly, FAAN has urged passengers and other airport users to exercise patience during this period, emphasising that the long-term benefits far outweigh the temporary inconveniences caused by the closure.
