The government of the state of Enugu has stated that it is prepared to provide proof against Simon Ekpa, who claims to be the head of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). In Finland, Ekpa was recently sent into custody by a district court over spreading terrorist propaganda in 2021. Through his involvement with a section of IPOB, he has been charged with having contributed to the ongoing violence in the southeast region of Nigeria since 2021. Governor Peter Mbah’s Enugu administration denounced Ekpa as a killer, fraudster, and terrorist who takes use of the Igbo people for his own benefit.
According to the administration, the arrest of the Finland Politician will promote Peace and stability in the area, and it is prepared to provide evidence for his trial in Nigeria or Finland. Citing the long-standing marginalisation of the Igbo ethnic community, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a separatist group in southeast Nigeria, calls for Biafra’s independence. Initially advocating for peaceful agitation, its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has been accused of instigating violence through Radio Biafra broadcasts.

In 2017, after deadly battles with Security forces and the formation of an armed branch known as the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the Nigerian government designated IPOB as a terrorist group. In the past, the southeast has had difficulty recovering from the devastation caused by the 1967–1970 Nigerian Civil War, especially affected Igbo populations. Prominent IPOB member Simon Ekpa has been charged with escalating violence in the southeast.
Operating out of Finland, he is accused of upsetting the security and economics of the area by inciting assaults on civilian and government targets via social media. Authorities in Nigeria and the Enugu State Government have connected him to crimes like extortion, property destruction, and fatalities while claiming to be raising money for Biafran independence. Attacks on police stations, government buildings, and the implementation of “sit-at-home” orders that halt regional economic activity are only a few instances of violence ascribed to IPOB factions.

These behaviours, which frequently involve violence and threats, have angered certain Igbo stakeholders and prompted censure from Nigerian society at large. The arrest of Simon Ekpa for disseminating terrorist propaganda in Finland serves as a reminder of the need of international legal cooperation in the fight against terrorism. Ekpa could be prosecuted under Finnish law, which views incitement to violence and Terrorism as serious offences. Nigeria will need to provide strong evidence and follow international Human Rights norms if it wants to extradite him. Given worries about Nigeria’s legal system, Finland—which is renowned for its stringent legal system—may place a higher priority on guarantees of a fair trial than extradition.
Furthermore, Enugu, a state with an Igbo majority, has cut connections with Ekpa because of the disruptive nature of his actions. The state administration and local leaders contend that his tactics hurt the Igbo people by promoting instability, stifling enterprise, and discrediting justifiable demands for justice in the southeast.
