Anora wins best original screenplay at the 2025 Writers Guild Awards.
The 2025 Writers Guild Awards provided a major boost to Anora’s Oscar campaign, as the film won Best Original Screenplay on Saturday night. This victory strengthens its position as a frontrunner for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The acclaimed drama triumphed over A Real Pain, Challengers, Civil War, and My Old Ass in a highly competitive category. Adding to its impressive awards season, Anora previously won top honors at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and Producers Guild of America (PGA) Awards. Notably, only Brokeback Mountain has swept all three without winning Best Picture, further fueling Anora’s Oscar momentum. Meanwhile, Nickel Boys won Best Adapted Screenplay, defeating A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Hit Man, and Wicked. In television, Shōgun won Best Drama Series, while Hacks reclaimed Best Comedy Series. Though WGA wins don’t always guarantee Oscar success, history suggests Anora remains a strong contender.
