Veteran Nigerian singer and actress, Onyeka Onwenu has reportedly passed away at the age of 72. She was said to have died on Tuesday night at Reddington Hospital in Lagos after collapsing at the birthday party of Emzor Pharmaceuticals’ CEO, Mrs. Stella Okoli. During her active recording years in the 1980s and 1990s, Onwenu sold millions of records and created hits such as “One Love,” “You and I,” “Ekwe,” “Alleluya,” “Bia Nulu,” “Iyogogo,” as well as duets “Wait For Me” and “Choices” with Sunny Ade. As an actress, she won an Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Supporting Actress in the film “Women’s Cot.” Many Nigerians have taken to social media to mourn her tragic passing. Onwenu’s contributions to the entertainment industry and advocacy for women’s rights leave a lasting legacy.
