Disney+ experiences subscriber decline for the first time after price hike.

Disney reported its Q1 2025 earnings, revealing that Disney+ lost 700,000 subscribers between October and December, with further modest declines expected throughout 2025. The drop is attributed to price hikes and a crackdown on password sharing. Despite this, Hulu subscriptions rose to 53.6 million, up from 52 million in the previous quarter. Disney+ last saw significant growth between June and September 2024, adding 4.4 million subscribers. With its ad-supported tier now priced at $9.99 and the ad-free option at $15.99, some users may be reconsidering their subscriptions. Meanwhile, Disney’s overall financial performance remained strong, with net income rising 23% to $2.64 billion and revenue increasing 4.8% to $24.69 billion. The success of Moana 2, which grossed over $1 billion, contributed to studio profits. However, Disney+ may continue to struggle in a competitive market. The company expects another subscriber decline in Q2 2025, reflecting ongoing challenges in the streaming industry.
