Sam Allison makes history as first black PL referee since 2008.
Tuesday’s clash between Luton and Sheffield United saw history being created, as former firefighter, Sam Allison became the first black referee to officiate a Premier League match since Uriah Rennie in 2008. The spotlight was on Allison for Sheffield’s controversial second goal but this was resolved perfectly. BAMRef, a support group that offers support to Black, Asian and mixed race referees, noted that this was a significant step toward a refereeing that reflects the society. Many believes this would go a long way in propagating the integration of other races into the PL refereeing system.
