Australia plans to ban social media for children under 16 years old.
The Australian government has just introduced what it calls a groundbreaking legislation to set a minimum age of 16 for social media use, with platforms responsible for enforcing it. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized the need for action, stating, “Social media is doing harm to our kids and I’m calling time on it.” The bill will be presented in Parliament in its final two-week session beginning November 18, and the age limit would be enforced one year after passage. Platforms like X, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook would use that time to implement measures preventing Australian children under 16 from accessing their services. Albanese expressed widespread concerns from parents and families about online safety for children. This proposal comes as governments globally grapple with youth tech regulation. Social media platforms would face penalties for violations, but no consequences would apply to underage users or their families.

The release of Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 postponed again to April 18, 2025.
Bong Joon-ho’s highly awaited sci-fi black comedy Mickey 17 has been postponed again, now set for April 18, 2025. Originally scheduled for March 2024, the Robert Pattinson-led film was first delayed to January 2025, before this latest change. Warner Bros., the studio behind the movie, confirmed the new date on Wednesday, emphasizing that it will be available in IMAX theaters worldwide. This decision came shortly after Lionsgate rescheduled its Michael Jackson biopic Michael from April 18, 2024, to October 3, 2025. “When the April 18 date became available, we quickly moved to secure it for Mickey 17. We’re thrilled with the new date,” a Warner Bros. spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter. Mickey 17, adapted from Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey 7, is Bong’s first film since his Oscar-winning Parasite.

Dune: Part Two to be submitted for Oscar category despite eligibility dilemma.
Warner Bros. is moving forward with an Oscar bid for Hans Zimmer’s score in Dune: Part Two, aiming for Academy recognition despite a possible eligibility hurdle. Zimmer’s music, which revisits themes from his Oscar-winning Dune (2021) score, faced scrutiny from an independent review, questioning whether it surpasses the Academy’s limit on pre-existing music in sequels. To be eligible, scores for sequels must not exceed 20% of reused material from earlier installments. Warner Bros. recently updated its For Your Consideration page to include Zimmer’s composition, showing their commitment to awards success. While the Academy’s Music Branch has yet to review the submission, decisions will become clearer after the shortlist voting on Dec. 9, with nominees announced Dec. 17. Meanwhile, Zimmer’s score remains eligible for other awards, including the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Critics Choice Awards, sustaining its awards season momentum.
