Social media platform, TikTok and its parent company ByteDance face a crucial court hearing on Monday in their legal battle against a law that could potentially ban the app, which is used by 170 million Americans, as early as January 19. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia will hear oral arguments, making TikTok’s future uncertain just ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are active on TikTok, appealing to younger voters. TikTok and ByteDance argue that the law violates free speech, while U.S. lawmakers worry about potential Chinese surveillance. ByteDance claims divesting from TikTok isn’t feasible and warns of an unprecedented ban if the court doesn’t intervene. Judges Sri Srinivasan, Neomi Rao, and Douglas Ginsburg will hear the case, with a ruling expected by December 6.
