Dave Umahi, the Minister of Works, officially started the process of demolishing a portion of Mami Chula Beach in Lagos to make room for the Construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway on April 27, 2024. Umahi decided to start demolishing after carefully examining stretches of road at kilometres 13, 16, and 20 in order to find the best and most cost-effective route to reach the coastal roads with minimal impact. He observed that the business needed to be demolished because it was situated on the Federal Government’s designated right of way.
He made it clear that there would be an impact on multiple buildings due to the demolition, but reassured that compensation would be offered. Umahi announced. In complete reverence to God, filled with gratitude to the Almighty, and a strong dedication to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, especially in their focus on infrastructural development, I am initiating this demolition. The area falls within the coastal corridor’s established right-of-way that is recognized as belonging to the Federal Government.
Those impacted by the demolition would receive fair compensation.
The Landmark Demolition was postponed multiple times at his request, giving an extended grace period of eleven days. Despite this flexibility, the project came to a halt due to the absence of any demolition work being done. He expressed gratitude to individuals like Bolaji for their efforts. It seems that out of the stretch from kilometre zero to four, he is the most significantly impacted. From his observations, it appears to be the only Infrastructure affected in the area.
Despite facing opposition from some individuals, the minister emphasized the importance of the project for economic growth. He reassured those impacted by the demolition that they would receive fair compensation and mentioned that the documentation process would commence on May 2 or May 3. Umahi made it clear that he would be easily reachable all week to assist with any concerns or questions regarding the demolition process, including confirmations or payments. In light of the situation, Bolaji Ariyo, the Chief Executive Officer of Mami Chula Beach, recognized the importance of the project in promoting growth.
This is a chance for the President of Nigeria to deliver on his promises.
More so, he understood, regardless of any minor disruptions it may cause to a few individuals. His words were filled with optimism as he expressed the collective desire for a renewed sense of hope in the nation. Many had hoped for progress and development during the campaign, and now see this as a chance for the President of Nigeria to deliver on his promises. Their faith in him remains strong, believing that he can make a difference.
As a resident of Lagos, he has witnessed long-standing plans for the development that is currently being executed by the President. While it is encouraging to see progress, there is also a sense of sorrow as some individuals inevitably bear the burden of sacrifice for the greater good. Their collective prayers for development have been answered, but it comes at a cost that cannot be ignored. Perhaps people are curious as to why he spoke in this manner. It could be due to his previous experiences on the opposing side.

Additionally, this experience has given him insight into the true meaning of governance and the promises made by governments to improve the lives of Nigerians. A small fraction of the total number of people who will enjoy the coastal roads are affected, without a doubt, but their numbers are less than 0.1% of the millions who will benefit from them. This is the reason why individuals such as himself feel compelled to show their support for both the President and the respected minister in their efforts to bring this road project to fruition.
