Computer scientists plan AI reform in schools

The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) has urged for a transformation in the Education sector in Nigeria to ensure that quality education is accessible and affordable for all, making teaching and learning more accessible and convenient. During an interview in Lagos, the president of NCS, Sirajo Aliyu, expressed his vision for a future where Technology will transform Nigerians’ learning and working methods. He declared that NCS, representing Information Technology (IT) professionals nationwide, aims to turn this vision into a tangible outcome. The NCS is leading the way in embracing cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data mining.

According to Mr. Sirajo, its commitment to developing innovative programs tailored to the industry’s demands demonstrates a forward-thinking approach. He believes education is a crucial area that will see significant improvements through the National Computer Society’s initiatives. Incorporating artificial intelligence into Higher Education institutions will make learning and teaching more accessible, cost-effective, and successful. He emphasised the idea of online learning being affordable and accessible to a wider audience due to the abundance of resources and the flexibility of self-paced learning.

Students will have the opportunity to access learning data for just ₦100.

This would significantly decrease the cost of education, ultimately expanding opportunities for individuals seeking quality learning. Mr. Sirajo emphasised the importance of government assistance in facilitating the integration of AI technology within the NCS and highlighted the efforts of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in enhancing Infrastructure to increase the accessibility and affordability of Broadband services. In order to facilitate a future where online classes are the standard, he proposed that students be able to access data for learning for a fee of ₦100.

During a recent virtual program hosted by the Nigeria Computer Society, IT professionals called for reforms in the country’s education system, particularly in technology and innovation. The professionals stressed the importance of advancing artificial intelligence to ensure the nation and Africa remain competitive globally. The event, named the Technology-Enhanced Learning/Computer Education Forum, was part of the third NCS conference series. The forum focused on the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the education system to better prepare students for the future of technology.

Professor Abejide Ibijola, an expert in Artificial Intelligence and its applications at the Johannesburg Business School within the University of Johannesburg in South Africa, highlighted the common challenges encountered by most African nations, similar to those experienced in the country. According to Mr. Ibijola, African youth, particularly in Nigeria, should undergo rapid training to prepare them for the future and promote a Culture of innovation. The professor emphasised the importance of prioritising excellent teaching as the continent envisions a future intertwined with AI in education.

Despite the challenges, the country’s initiative to integrate AI into its education system holds great promise for revolutionising learning in underserved communities. By offering Digital Learning solutions, AI can help bridge the education gap and provide quality education to students in rural areas. With improved infrastructure, such as increased Internet Access and reliable electricity, the potential for AI to democratize education across the country is immense. By overcoming these limitations, the region can unlock the full potential of artificial intelligence to transform its education system for the better.
