Ms. Yan Yuqing, the Consul-General of the Chinese Consulate in Nigeria, has reaffirmed the People’s Republic of China’s unwavering commitment to support the Nigeria’s government within the education sector. She made this known during the introduction of the free Chinese Online Classroom Project at the Ogun-Guangdong Free Trade Zone (OGFTZ) in Igbesa, Ogun State. During her announcement, Yuqing mentioned that the joint project with the Chinese Ministry of Education marked a crucial moment in the cultural and economic partnership between Nigeria and China. The Free Trade Zone Online Chinese Classroom was highlighted as a major achievement in this collaboration.
In accordance with President Xi Jinping’s efforts to support African development, the program aims to nurture Chinese-speaking individuals in order to enhance local economies and promote mutual understanding. The objective of the virtual course is to facilitate cultural exchange and improve relations between Nigeria and China by providing tertiary students and others with the opportunity to learn Mandarin Chinese. By prioritizing Technology adoption, professional development, and international readiness, the project demonstrates OGFTZ’s dedication to creating a conducive atmosphere for Nigerian and Chinese enterprises.
Equipping undergraduates with skills is a crucial aspect.
Madame Jinhong stressed the importance of the initiative to expand Chinese language Education globally through online classes and live streams. She noted that the partnership with Yunnan Agricultural University aims to train proficient speakers who also possess practical skills, fostering cultural connections and facilitating collaboration opportunities. During his speech, Kevin Liu, the Deputy General Manager of China-Africa Investment FZC, stated that equipping university undergraduates with skills and opportunities for economic Empowerment is a crucial aspect of the program.
Liu mentioned that in addition to the students at the academy, community members with an interest in learning Mandarin will also gain from the initiative. He extended his gratitude to the Chinese Consulate General for their backing, as well as the cooperation of the Chinese Ministry of Education and Ogun State government. Liu also expressed strong belief in the success of the project and emphasized the desire for widespread benefits across Africa, particularly in Nigeria.
Govt is prepared to integrate Chinese language into its curriculum.
Madame Wang, one of the project coordinators, outlined the project’s goal of enhancing communication between workers and experts by teaching workers new skills and knowledge through language acquisition. The ultimate aim is to enhance the technical expertise of workers and ensure a more localized approach. Thereby, achieving the goal of closing the divide between knowledge and vocational skills. She revealed that the class organizers are seeking ways to collaborate with state universities to create a curriculum. More than 600 individuals have signed up for the class, with registrations coming from both in-person and online sources, according to Wang.
Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Ogun State, expressed confidence in the project’s organizers and promised the Chinese community the full backing of the State government. He emphasized that the government is prepared to integrate Chinese language teaching into its Curriculum to enhance understanding, create more opportunities, and empower its citizens. He believes that participating in this program will not only improve his language skills, but also enhance his technical knowledge and potentially lead to higher-paying job opportunities.
