During the 23rd S.L. Edu Memorial Lecture in Lagos, Chevron Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to Climate Action and a lower-carbon future. The event, held in honour of the founder of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), highlighted the company’s dedication to innovation, collaboration, and research in reducing carbon intensity. The company’s efforts to advance Sustainable Energy solutions were showcased, aligning with global net-zero goals. The Chairman and Managing Director of the oil and gas giant, Jim Swartz, underscored the institution’s vision of delivering affordable, reliable, and cleaner energy while prioritising environmental conservation.
Represented by Olusoga Oduselu, the General Manager of Policy, Government, and Public Affairs, Swartz noted the company’s collaboration with the National Climate Change Council in developing the country’s Carbon Market Framework, illustrating their innovative approaches to tackling environmental change challenges. They have implemented various projects to enhance ecosystem performance, including energy efficiency initiatives, flare reductions, Renewable Energy investments, and carbon capture technologies. Among its notable contributions is the Lekki Conservation Centre (LCC), established in 1992 with funding from Chevron Corporation.
Focus on environmental projects and economic contributions.
Furthermore, this sanctuary, dedicated to preserving the rich flora and fauna of the Lekki Peninsula, serves as a vital carbon sink while supporting biodiversity. Today, the LCC has become one of Africa’s most prominent urban parks, attracting tourists and researchers globally. It provides a habitat for Endangered Species and promotes environmental education, demonstrating the intersection of conservation efforts and economic prosperity. By maintaining its partnership with the NCF, the oil and gas giant continues to support initiatives that address environmental challenges while contributing to the nation’s economy. Chevron Corporation’s commitment to the Paris Agreement further underscores its global dedication to combating environmental change.
This international treaty, ratified by 193 countries and the European Union, aims to limit global warming and promote ecosystem adaptation measures. Chevron Nigeria’s alignment with these objectives reflects its proactive approach to addressing its issues through Innovation and collaboration. At the memorial lecture, Swartz commended the insightful contributions of the guest speaker, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving Sustainable Development in Africa. The lecture’s theme, “Greening Africa’s Economies: Can Climate Positive Growth Deliver Prosperity?” focused on the critical need for integrating Environmental Sustainability with economic progress. Swartz’s support for Osinbajo’s ‘Call to Action’ further reinforces their resolve to contribute to a greener and more prosperous Africa.
Addressing environmental change, roles and supporting conservation.
Climate change, driven predominantly by human activities such as Fossil Fuel combustion and deforestation, poses significant threats to ecosystems and human livelihoods. The average atmospheric concentration of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) reached an unprecedented 419.3 parts per million in 2023, over 50 percent higher than pre-industrial levels. This increase has led to record-breaking global temperatures, with the past decade being the hottest. Deforestation alone accounts for about 20 percent of global Greenhouse gas emissions, surpassing Emissions from all passenger vehicles worldwide.
Tropical forests, which play a crucial role in carbon storage and ecosystem mitigation, require enhanced protection and funding. Despite their significance, nature-based solutions receive only 3 percent of global environmental funding. Chevron’s initiatives, including its support for the NCF and projects like the LCC, address these challenges by promoting conservation and sustainable land use. Meanwhile, effective climate action necessitates collaboration among governments, corporations, and civil society. Chevron’s partnerships with organisations like the NCF and the National Climate Change Council demonstrate its commitment to promoting collective efforts to mitigate climate impacts.
