Successful implementation of the initiative will improve service delivery.

Mr. Tony Emoekpere, President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), has highlighted the importance of the Federal Government’s Strategic Framework for the sector during a press briefing in Lagos. Emoekpere stressed that the successful implementation of this framework is crucial for improving the performance of the telecommunications industry. The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy (FMoCIDE) has put together a plan to lead its projects and meet goals that will positively impact the Nigerian people.

In addition, the structure of this framework is built upon five foundational pillars, which include Knowledge, Policy, Entrepreneurship and Capital, Infrastructure, Innovation, and Trade. Each pillar has been designed with precise objectives to tackle essential elements of Nigeria’s digital economy. An example of this is the ministry’s strategy for Infrastructure enhancement, which includes partnerships with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), as well as the Nigerian Communications Satellite Ltd (NIGCOMSAT).

Lack of advancement in execution has impacted the sector in the past.

Furthermore, NITDA is working towards broadening the Innovation ecosystem and improving Nigeria’s Economic Complexity Index (ECI) ranking. He, therefore, recognized the strategic plan as a step in the right direction but pointed out a lack of significant advancement in its execution within the sector in the last year. ATCON eagerly awaits the enactment of policies and strategies for the sector, including the hopes expressed at various meetings for the classification of telecoms infrastructure as a Critical National Asset.

The importance of heightened government participation and dedication in the industry was stressed by the ATCON president, who pointed out unresolved matters that needed resolution. He praised the creation of a Special Purpose Vehicle for helping install an extra 90,000 kilometres of fibre optic cable, describing it as a step in the right direction.

Infrastructure connectivity, internet access, and other things will be enhanced.

Emoekpere emphasized the importance of this expansion in improving connectivity infrastructure in Nigeria, strengthening the national backbone, and promoting widespread Internet Access across the nation. The successful implementation of the federal government’s strategic framework for the sector is of immense importance. Improved knowledge, policy, infrastructure, and innovation within the industry directly impact the quality and accessibility of services available to the Nigerian populace. By focusing on these critical areas, the government is working towards enhancing connectivity, expanding access to digital resources, and fostering Economic Growth for all citizens.
