A leading telecommunications provider, Airtel Nigeria, has proposed an extensive plan for reforming Education in the country. This proposal aims to revitalise Nigeria’s struggling Educational System using cutting-edge technologies. Femi Adeniran, Director of Corporate Communications and CSR for Airtel Nigeria, announced this during Lagos’s 1 Million Teachers Blackbelt graduation event. Airtel Nigeria co-sponsored an event with a panel discussion titled “Leveraging Expertise and Innovations for Advancing Educational Reforms in Africa”. The panel included individuals from various backgrounds, including Patrick Egbunonu, a faculty member from St. Lawrence College in Canada.
Furthermore, Emmanuel Asika, the Country Head of HP Nigeria, and Olanrewaju Oniyitan, the Project Director at the Seed Care and Support Foundation. Adeniran stressed the importance of delivering high-quality content to market schools in the modern digital era. Schools are limited in their ability to use children for advertising and publicity, meaning they must instead focus on building strong community connections through effective programs to share their accomplishments. He emphasised the importance of transparent communication channels, like Parent-Teacher Association meetings, in keeping parents updated on spreading strategies to the community.
Over 600K students and public schools benefitted from the partnership.
Adeniran further emphasised the importance of educational institutions leveraging Social Media platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn to connect with their stakeholders and enhance their reputation. He pointed out Airtel’s commitment to school through their $57 million partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), which has facilitated access to Digital Learning for 960 public schools and benefited over 600,000 students. By actively engaging with stakeholders and investing in education initiatives, Airtel demonstrates its dedication to positively impacting the community and promoting a brighter future for students.
Jamiu Alli-Balogun, Commissioner of Basic Education in Lagos State, commended organisations for partnering with the government to enhance educational initiatives. He encouraged teachers to protect their profession and stay updated on technological advancements to support their students better. Alli-Balogun stressed the importance of continuous learning and adapting to new technologies to improve teaching methods. He emphasised the need for educators to embrace Innovation and collaboration with external partners to ensure the success of educational programs in the country.
Govt support will be needed to achieve the tech-based education initiative.
In addition, the federal and state governments need to collaborate closely with telecommunications providers and educational institutions to support Airtel’s initiative for educational reform through technology. Policies encouraging cutting-edge Technology Integration in schools and funding for digital learning initiatives can help bridge the technological gap in the learning sector. Also, communities play a vital role in supporting these efforts by promoting a Culture of innovation and embracing digital learning resources for students of all ages.
However, the country’s school system benefits greatly from the initiative by the organisation’s push for educational reform with technology. By leveraging advanced technologies and digital platforms, schools can enhance the learning experience for students, making learning more engaging and accessible. With increased access to digital learning tools and resources, students can develop crucial skills for the latest and updated job market and become more competitive globally. Airtel’s partnership with UNICEF and other stakeholders sets a valuable precedent for integrating Technology in schools nationwide.
