Artificial intelligence is transforming Education in Nigerian schools, with a new initiative in Benin City showcasing the benefits of generative AI. Launched during the rainy season of 2024, the six-week pilot program, introduced AI as a virtual tutor for students aged 12–17. Led by World Bank Education Specialist Martín E. De Simone, the program aimed to address key educational challenges, such as the lack of resources for personalised learning, and overcrowded classrooms. Students who participated in the AI program showed notable improvements in digital literacy, English, and AI skills compared to their peers who did not engage with the program.
One of the striking results from the program was that students who attended more AI sessions experienced greater improvements in their learning outcomes. The more sessions they participated in, the better their performance, including subjects outside the program’s focus. Even with disruptions such as Teacher strikes and flooding, students who participated consistently demonstrated remarkable progress, gaining substantial benefits from the AI-assisted lessons. De Simone noted that this success mirrors trends seen in similar AI initiatives around the world, reinforcing AI’s potential to foster self-learning and equip students with vital skills that can have a lasting impact on their academic achievements.

The success of the program was also marked by the improvement in students who were initially performing poorly, particularly girls, who outperformed expectations.
