Agro-Industrial target 50,000 jobs in 5 years

The Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) project, a new initiative led by the African Development Bank (AfDB), is set to create approximately 50,000 jobs over the next five years in Nigeria. This initiative aims to transform the agricultural landscape by leveraging commercial Agriculture to reinforce Sustainable Development across the country. Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), recently stated the project’s potential at the launch of the distribution of agricultural inputs to beneficiaries in the FCT.

Mr. Lawan Geidam, Mandate Secretary of the Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat of the FCT Administration, delivered her remarks. However, the SAPZ was launched in October 2022; the project is a collaborative effort by the AfDB, which works alongside governments and the Private Sector in 11 African nations. The initiative seeks to revitalise rural areas by converting them into economic hubs through enhanced agro-industrial processing. Dr. Mahmoud emphasised agriculture’s critical role in meeting fundamental human needs and supporting national economies.

Farmers and entrepreneurs struggle with climate and market limitations.

She acknowledged that while agriculture remains essential, farmers and Agro-entrepreneurs face challenges, including climate change, inadequate agricultural practices, and limited market access. Addressing these issues requires innovative and collaborative strategies. The SAPZ project aims to inject essential manpower, resources, and investments into the agricultural sector to drive sustainable growth. Dr. Mahmoud expressed optimism that the distribution of agricultural inputs such as bull calves, animal feeds, improved seeds, fertilisers, crop protection chemicals, and equipment would catalyse a more resilient agricultural sector in the FCT.

In the project’s initial phase, 5,000 crop and Livestock farmers have been chosen to receive support. Mr. Geidam stated that the primary goal of the SAPZ is to unlock the livestock sector’s potential in the FCT through crucial financing and support. This initiative encompasses training programs and funding for various agricultural ventures, aiming to reduce production costs and boost farmers’ profitability. Focusing on financial and educational assistance, the project seeks to create a more sustainable and profitable agricultural sector for the selected farmers.

Hajia Umma Abubakar, the SAPZ Project Coordinator for the FCT, described the project as a flagship initiative to transform the country’s agriculture sector. She emphasised that the focus is on enhancing the livestock value chain and advancing the industrial processing and marketing of beef and dairy products. This comprehensive approach is expected to generate employment opportunities for youth and women, improve household incomes, and stimulate Economic Growth in rural communities. The project aims to drive advancements in agriculture while promoting broader Economic Development and stability in these areas.

Additionally, the initiative is a comprehensive effort to modernise the country’s agricultural sector by integrating innovative practices and developing robust infrastructure. The project promotes sustainable farming methods that enhance Productivity and resilience by tackling pressing challenges like climate change. Improved market access is another critical focus, ensuring farmers can efficiently reach and benefit from local and international markets. This approach aims to create a self-sufficient agricultural industry capable of sustaining economic growth, reducing poverty, and improving Food Security across the country.
