The Wini Group is set to establish Nigeria’s first artificial intelligence-focused university in Epe, Lagos, positioning Africa on the global Technology map. Named Wini University, the institution aims to transform Lagos into a hub for innovation, equipping young Nigerians with advanced AI knowledge and preparing them for leadership roles in the global technology market. Inspired by Qatar’s AI university, Wini University will provide training in cutting-edge technologies like blockchain, cloud computing, generative AI, data science, and machine learning, aligning with global trends to address Unemployment and foster economic growth.
Olukayode Akano, Chairman of Wini Group of Nigeria, explained that the initiative, in development since 2016, reflects years of collaboration between Nigerian and Boston-based visionaries. He emphasised the university’s role in shaping the continent’s technological future, contributing to the projected $4.6 trillion global AI market by 2040. According to Akano, this bold move will not only establish Lagos as Africa’s Silicon Valley but also empower Nigerian youths to develop solutions to real-world problems while advancing the Fourth Industrial Revolution across Africa.
Nigeria’s move could position It as a global AI leader.
This project arrives at a pivotal moment for Nigeria, where Education systems need to align with modern demands. Wini Group sees the university as more than an academic institution, positioning it as a catalyst for Africa’s participation in global AI development. The institution’s goals echo President Vladimir Putin’s 2013 statement that the nation leading in AI would dominate as the next global superpower. As AI becomes central to global industries, Nigeria’s move to establish a specialised AI university positions the country to compete on the global stage, with ongoing support from the National Universities Commission (NUC), ensuring Africa plays an active role in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Moreover, the establishment of Wini University represents a landmark step in Africa’s technological journey. By equipping students with advanced AI knowledge, the university aims to create a generation of innovators capable of redefining traditional industries. Courses on generative AI, Blockchain, and Data Science will not only prepare students for emerging roles but also position Nigeria as a leader in AI solutions tailored to global and local challenges. This approach holds promise for addressing critical issues like unemployment while bridging the technological gap between Africa and developed regions.
Lagos offers the perfect setting for Innovation.
Furthermore, the project’s location in Lagos, often referred to as Nigeria’s economic powerhouse, is strategic. As the most populous city in Africa’s largest economy, Lagos provides an ideal environment for fostering innovation. The city’s growing tech ecosystem offers opportunities for collaboration between academia, government, and private organisations, which will be vital to achieving Wini University’s ambitious goals. By creating an ecosystem where research translates into real-world applications, the institution could catalyse advancements in healthcare, agriculture, and other sectors vital to Africa’s development.
In pursuing this ambitious vision, Wini University draws valuable lessons from global initiatives that have transformed their regions into thriving technology hubs. These projects highlight the importance of aligning academic programmes with real-world applications and fostering partnerships between academia and industry. Drawing inspiration from Qatar’s pioneering AI university, which has attracted top scholars and innovators, Wini University aims to replicate and adapt this success for the African context while addressing the continent’s unique challenges and opportunities.
