The Federal Government has committed to strengthening surgical research in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions as part of broader efforts to improve healthcare delivery. At the annual meeting of the National Institute of Health Research Global Surgery Unit (NIHR GSU) in Lagos, Dr Kamil Soretire, Director of Health Planning, Research and Statistics at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, highlighted the ministry’s support for initiatives fostering collaboration between federal and state institutions. Soretire noted that most research efforts are led by federal teaching hospitals and medical centres, with limited involvement from state-owned health institutions. However, he described this collaboration between federal and state governments as a positive step towards building a unified research framework.
Themed “Equipping Surgeons for Surgical Research – Role of Regulatory Instructions,” the conference drew attention to the ethical and regulatory requirements of conducting research in a high-stakes field like surgery. Prof. Adesoji Ademuyiwa, Director of the NIHR GSU at the University of Lagos, explained that surgical research directly affects patient care and, therefore, must adhere to strict protocols. He emphasised the importance of frameworks such as randomised control trials, which require approvals from the National Health Ethics Research Committee and the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control. These regulatory measures ensure that Nigerian research meets international standards, thereby improving the credibility and applicability of findings both locally and globally.

Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), recognised as a key hub for surgical research in Nigeria, plays a central role in advancing these efforts.
