This will expand the hospital's already successful kidney transplant program.

Nigeria’s Afe Babalola University (ABUAD) and India’s Marengo Asia Healthcare Private Limited (AMSH) have inked a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to aid the improvement of kidney transplant services in Nigeria and lessen the need for medical travel. According to ABUAD Multi-System Hospital Chief Medical Director Dr. Kolawole Ogundipe, the partnership will expand the hospital’s already successful kidney transplant program, offer specialised renal care, and introduce cutting-edge treatments for erectile dysfunction, such as endourology and penile implants.

Dialysis treatments at their hospital have expanded dramatically, from 10 to more than 400 each month. Additionally, by partnering with AMSH, the hospital will be able to perform advanced surgical procedures and laparoscopic procedures, increasing its medical capabilities. Since its launch in 2021, the kidney transplant program has advanced significantly. As evidence of the potential of the partnership, the hospital has successfully performed four kidney transplants in the last 48 hours. Urology and Renal Transplant specialist Dr. Rajiv Sood of Marengo commended ABUAD’s round-the-clock service and said he was hopeful that this collaboration will turn AMSH into a Medical Tourism destination in Africa.

The collaboration will give ABUAD’s medical team advanced training.

He also emphasised how common erectile dysfunction is among African males and connected it to a number of medical conditions, including Diabetes and hypertension. An important step in extending Nigeria’s renal healthcare services will be the January 2025 launch of the new kidney transplant program at Afe Babalola University (ABUAD) Multi-System Hospital. A detailed strategy to improve the hospital’s capacity to do kidney transplants and related treatments is outlined in the two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) inked with Marengo Asia Healthcare Private Limited (AMSH) of India.

With the aim of performing frequent and effective kidney transplants at a level equivalent to worldwide norms, the MOU period will be devoted to increasing the number and calibre of kidney transplants. By utilising AMSH’s experience, the first goal is to enhance the number of kidney transplants performed, with the goal of doing several transplants per week by the conclusion of the MOU period. To guarantee the continuation of these services after the agreement period, the collaboration will also give their medical team advanced training.

It is a testament to ABUAD’s dedication to offering life-saving care.

Since performing its first successful kidney transplant in October 2021, ABUAD Multi-System Hospital has already built a strong foundation in renal treatment. From providing 10 dialysis sessions per month to more than 400 treatments, the hospital has advanced significantly since then. A noteworthy accomplishment that demonstrates the potential of its growing renal program is the hospital’s successful completion of several kidney transplants, including four transplants in a 48-hour span. This expansion is a testament to the dedication to offering Nigerians life-saving care and lowering the need for patients to travel overseas for specialised care.

Testimonials from patients highlight the effectiveness of ABUAD’s kidney transplant services. One such tale is that of Mr. Adewale, a 56-year-old patient who underwent a successful kidney transplant in early 2023 despite having end-stage renal illness. Prior to the transplant, Mr. Adewale was receiving dialysis three times a week and was getting ready to travel to India for treatment because there weren’t many transplant choices available in Nigeria. However, he made the decision to have the surgery done locally after learning about this new transplant program.

Mr. Adewale recovered completely after the transplant and is no longer in need of dialysis, demonstrating the transformative power of the hospital’s work. Similar stories have been told by other patients, many of whom have expressed gratitude for the chance to obtain top-notch care in Nigeria without having to deal with the emotional and financial burden of medical tourism. ABUAD hopes to establish itself as a premier kidney transplant facility in Nigeria and a possible centre for medical tourism in Africa as the two-year MOU goes on. Along with increasing the hospital’s surgical capabilities, the collaboration with AMSH will establish it as a premier hub for cutting-edge medical Education and specialised treatment.
