Prof. Tunde Adeniran, a former Minister of Education, has stated that restructuring is the only way for Nigeria to progress as a nation. In an interview with TUNDE THOMAS, he stated that Nigeria can only achieve the desired glory if the country is restructured. He also discussed other national issues. The country’s security situation has remained a cause of national worry, particularly in light of the recent attack and kidnapping of numerous passengers at the Edo State train station.
Today’s position in the country is appalling. The country’s security issue is not something that can be wished away. Citizens must be proactive as a government, people, and a nation. Efforts are being made here and there to protect lives and property, but we have not done enough to protect Nigerians’ lives and property. We don’t have to wait for a crisis to strike before we take action or start running in circles. Our security organizations should be able to predict and predict what will occur in any section of the country. People, particularly those in charge of security, have a tendency to believe that the steps they are taking are functioning as planned and that Nigerians should not be concerned about the country’s security situation.
Nigerians must cooperate with the Federal Government to resolve challenges.
To address the security concerns, Nigerians must work with the Federal Government, and that cooperation will come when citizens believe that the government is not just serious, but also taking actual steps to protect their lives and property. Youths are a powerful force in maintaining the security of this country, but we must first ensure their livelihood before we can call on them to play their own role in the efforts to safeguard the country. However, a hungry youth with no assurance for today and no hope for their future will not be an ideal candidate to join the fight against insecurity. The many communities, including their traditional rulers, play an important role, as does each branch of government.
Many people nowadays are skeptical that when they take part or play a role in apprehending criminals, their efforts will not be in vain, as there have been countless cases in the past where such arrested criminals found ways to dodge prosecution through unpatriotic acts of some influential individuals. This is one of the reasons why some Nigerians question if it is worthwhile to aid the government in its fight against criminals. At this point, law enforcement authorities must work harder than ever before for the sake of individual Nigerians and the Nigerian nation.
Things can’t work with the structure we have in the nation.
Nigeria cannot progress as a nation until it undergoes restructuring. The policy will undergo several drastic changes as a result of reorganization. People have been moaning about ASUU strikes, but once restructured, when something goes wrong at the University of Kano, it does not affect those at the University of Maiduguri or the University of Abuja, and when certain things go wrong in Lagos, it does not cause a shutdown in other states. The restructure may result in a system in which certain states may elect to pay their personnel more or less than what the federal government pays, as opposed to the current arrangement in which ASUU members’ salaries are uniform.
When you restructure, governors from affluent and poor states are no longer required to be paid on the same scale. People who are more resourceful will be rewarded more than those who are not, and of course, some of the wasteful expenditures that occurs in various sectors, including states, will be reduced to the bare minimum since each state will have to cut its coat according to its fabric. However, with the current organization of the country, things cannot and will not function. When we restructure, we will be able to micromanage some of the difficulties and challenges that we face in the country now. Only by doing so will we be able to obtain the desired results.
Those responsible should be judged by how they the actions that they take.
Human life is priceless. Human life must be protected. Human life should be safeguarded. However, those who take human life with reckless abandon, who are only concerned with what they may get materially and are unconcerned about how they squander other people’s lives, should have their own lives judged by how they measure other people’s lives. In other words, if you are willing to murder the lives of others in order to satisfy your own personal desires, then the government must take steps to prohibit you from doing so. In certain cases, the death penalty should be able to function as a deterrent. When you consider the overall number of people who have taken other people’s lives with reckless abandon, the death penalty should serve set as a deterrent.
